Front Mission: Dog Life & Dog Style
Adapted from the Front Mission game, Front Mission: Dog Life & Dog Style is set on the year 2090 in the fictional island called Huffman Island, a newly-formed island that emerged from deep due to a volcanic eruption during the second half of the 20th century. Because of the island's richness in natural resources, many powerful nations have claim ownership of the island. In 2020, the USA started to absorb its surrounding countries and declared the eastern side of the island as its territory. To get back at them, each of the countries in the Pacific rim combined and made the new country OCU on the western half of the island. Twenty years after a flimsy ceasefire between the 2 supernations, military tensions still continue to rise. One night, a factory on the east side was attacked and the USN government strongly claimed that the attacked was an invasion attempt by the OCU. Despite the denial of the attack by the OCU government, the president of the USN announced the beginning of hostilities and fired a missile at the capital city of the western side, Freedom City.
Front Mission: Dog Life & Dog Style really showcases the realities of wars and how it affects people from different walks of life. Trigger warning though, the manga is graphic and will really truly show you the destruction caused by wars.
The manga was split into Styles which are short stories of various civilians and military personnels caught up in the war. These styles are connected through Kenichi Onizuka, a Japanese journalist who is documenting the horrors of war on the front lines.
My Unlucky Days and the Shepherd's Return arcs are my personal favorites.
In Unlucky Days, Kenichi stumbles upon a refugee camp near the front lines where he stayed for a week while waiting for the next bus to the nearby city. The arc features the different stories of the refugees and their everyday lives while the war is raging on, all caught through the lenses of Kenichi's cellphone. The arc ended with Kenichi getting a phone call from his colleague telling him that his documentary with the refugees is nominated for an award and that the refugee camp has been bombed a week after he left.
The Shepherd's Return arc features the story of 2 brothers who meet each other again on the front lines, fighting for the two opposing sides of the war. The arc is still on going but it will surely keep you on your heels.
